How to visit La Gomera ?

Why travel to La Gomera?

La Gomera, one of the lesser-known Canary Islands, is a hidden gem worth exploring. It's perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking a quieter, more authentic Canary Islands experience. With its lush green forests, dramatic landscapes, charming villages, and beautiful black-sand beaches, La Gomera offers a unique and unforgettable adventure.

How to get there?

The easiest way to reach La Gomera is by flying to Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and then taking a ferry to San Sebastián de La Gomera. There are several daily ferries operated by Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas, with the journey taking around 50 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the service. You can also fly into La Gomera Airport (GMZ) from Tenerife North Airport (TFN), but flights are less frequent and more expensive.

What to book in advance?

It's a good idea to book your accommodations and ferry tickets in advance, especially during the high season (October to April). If you plan to rent a car, reserve it ahead of time to ensure availability. Guided tours or hikes in Garajonay National Park can also be booked in advance, as well as whale and dolphin watching excursions.

What are the costs?

La Gomera is generally more affordable than the more popular Canary Islands. Accommodations range from budget-friendly guesthouses to mid-range hotels and luxury paradores. Expect to pay around €30-50 for budget options and €80-150 for mid-range hotels. Meals at local restaurants are reasonably priced, with an average cost of €10-20 per person. Car rental prices start at around €20 per day, while guided tours and excursions vary depending on the activity.

Best things to do

1. Explore Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its ancient laurel forests and countless hiking trails.
2. Visit the picturesque villages of Agulo, Hermigua, and Vallehermoso, each with its unique charm and stunning views.
3. Relax on the black-sand beaches of Playa de Santiago, Valle Gran Rey, and Hermigua.
4. Discover the island's fascinating history at the Christopher Columbus House Museum in San Sebastián.
5. Take a whale and dolphin watching tour to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Where to eat?

1. Restaurante Las Chácaras in Hermigua, known for its traditional Canarian cuisine and stunning views.
2. La Vieja Escuela in Vallehermoso, serving delicious local dishes in a cozy atmosphere.
3. Junonia in Playa de Santiago, offering fresh seafood and Mediterranean-inspired dishes with a modern twist.

Where to stay?

1. Parador de La Gomera, a luxury hotel set in a historic building with beautiful gardens and spectacular views.
2. Hotel Rural Casa Lugo in Agulo, a charming guesthouse with comfortable rooms and a lovely courtyard.
3. Apartamentos Los Telares in Hermigua, offering self-catering apartments with stunning views of the valley.

Off the beaten path

For an unusual travel experience, hike to the remote village of El Cedro, located deep within Garajonay National Park. Accessible only by foot, this small hamlet is home to a few local residents and a charming guesthouse, Casa Rural Los Chorros. Enjoy the tranquility and stunning natural surroundings while sampling traditional Gomeran dishes at the guesthouse's restaurant or taking a dip in the natural swimming pool nearby.
